Tangitu.

Since, writing to you last, several things of importance have taken place in this part of the world. Everything in connection with the telephone has been fixed up. A subsidy of £lO being the amount per year asked for, this has been sent to the Department, ! and it is to be hoped that this matter will not be hung up, as it is very important for the settlers to have communication with the outside world in case of sickness or accident. The connecting point is to be at Ongarue. The weather has broken at last, and settlers are busy getting in their grass-seed, pack horses arriving daily. The first cart arrived here a few days ago. Mr A. Elliott, of Waimiha, carted in timber for one of the settlers. It is a great pity the Public Works Department has delayed so long with the opening of this road for wheel traffic to the eight mile, which I am sure, with the funds and men that were available, should have been open two months ago, instead of as at present, when the dry weather is over. The dray road is under way to our but as is the usual way here'with the department there will be some parts of it left unfinished to hinder settlers from deriving any benefits from the whole before next summer. It is reported that the Education Department are sending down three marquees for erection so as to enable settlers to send their children to school pending the erection of permanent school, which I think under the circumstances is a capita] idea. I am told that the department will find furniture for same, but settlers will have to carry it to schools free of charge, and I feel sure that a good muster will be available. I might mention that the inspector reported favourably on the three schools applied for—one in the Mangaiti Valley on Mr Bojme's section, one at the township site, and one on the school site at Mokauiti Valley. Mrs E. F. Fraci, who has been ill for some considerable time, is now reported to be convalescent. Settlers with their wives and families are getting on to their respective holdings in accordance with the regulations, which state that we must reside with wife and family three months after the first burn, and any man not complying with this regualtion wiil lose his section. Mr J. Binny, storekeeper of Waimiha and Tangitu, has sold his Tangitu branch to Messrs Hogg and Christensen, of Waimiha, who intend opening up with a full supply of settlers' requirements in a few days. I wish them every success in their new venture. Word has been received here, in reply to deputations which waited on Mr Jennings, M.P., during his visit to the block, that the Minister of Railways is obtaining a report re the erection of cattle yards at Waimiha. These are absolutely necessary, settlers at present having to jump stock out of trucks at their own risk, in the midst of dozens of Maori dogs. It is high time that the collector of dog taxes paid a visit to Waimiha, also Tangitu, I am sure he would get a great haul.
