WORKERS' DWELLINGS.
Much interest is being taken by working men in the new workers' dwellings scheme and enquiries are being made as to the conditions under which a worker may acquire his own house. It seems that half a dozen applications from any one centre are necessary to keep down the cost of erection. The land must be Crown land or purchaseable by the Grown from private persons, It must not cost more than £SO to £6O a quarter acre section. £lO deposited by any worker earning not more than £175 a year, provided the other conditions are also favourable, will induce the Labour Department to move in the matter. Ten different plans of houses are now available free of cost. The dwelling is protected against seizure for debt and arrangements can be made to insure that the house goes free of mortgage to the wife or surviving relatives in the event of the death of the husband.
