Mapara.
The majority of the settlers in the above block are at present busy on their holdings burning, grass-seeding, scrub cutting, etc., consequently the roads are not being pushed on with the same vigour as heretofore. As far as they are concerned we have been well treated, there being only about a mile unfinished of the main road, which will be in hand after a month or so. The Public Works Department has called tenders for the Mokau-Kahu-wera bridge, and it is to be hoped the successful tenderer will be compelled to go on with the work straight asvay, as the settlers at that end depend on temporary foot bridges erected by themselves, which are practically useless for winter. As to school matters, we are still behind the ti-nes. The settlers have communicated with the Auckland Education Board, re their desire to have a school pushed on, and as there are something like forty children of school age, their requests sserns reasonable. The Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr F. Simpson), during his recent visit, inspected the site, and declared it to be quite an ideal one. It is section 7, comprising about eight acres on the river bank, and is in every way most suitable, being in the centre of the block. If _ some immediate steps are not taken in the matter, there will be a "blue flame'] hovering about the heads of some of the Mapara settlers, and considering the amount of smoke we've got here at present, we could very well dispense with that.
