When the Mokoia was ready to sail from Auckland at 4 o'clock on Saturday, it was discovered that three stokers were absent and thai the ship was short of her complement. Engineers and others failed to find the deserters arid they were equally unsuccessful in search for substitutes. Finally three passengers who had been paid oil at Whangape were pressed into service, but not before they arranged for the payment of £lO for the three days' trip.
