Andy Newell, the cricketer who disappeared three years ago, has written to a friend from Valparaiso, stating that he disappeared for domestic reasons. SOUTH AFRICANS BEAT BALLARAT. Received February 1, 8.55 a.m. Melbourne, This Day. The South Africans defeated Ballarat by an innings and 206 runs. Ballarat in the first innings made 127—Hore 27, Morgan 20, and Bailey 24, being the chief scorers. In the second innings they made 122 —Campbell 2(i. Barker 27, Middleton (not out) 20, being the principal scorers. Fegler did ths hat trick in the first and Llewellyn in the second innings. SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH. Received January 31, 5.55 p.m. Sydney, Last night. Victoria in the second innings made 88 runs, of which Kortlang 30, and McKcnize 23, were the chief scorers. Hordern took six wickets for 32 runs, and Macartney two for 18. PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH. AUCKLAND v. CANTERBURY. Playing for the Plunket Shield, at Auckland, the home team made 349 in their first innings and 199 in their second innings—a grand total of 545. Canterbury compiled 2G9 in their first innings, and requiring 280 runs to win, had made 32 runs for no wickets (Lusk not cut 14, Caygill 4, extras 14), when stumps were drawn last night. Auckland, This Day. The match was resumed at 11 this morning, in fine weather and a good wicket. At the end of eighty minutes' play Canterbury had lost one wicket for 91 runs, out of which Caygill, who was caught by Snedden, had made 23.
