COUNTRY NEWS.

Own Correspondents. Paraheka Valley. A meeting of settlers was held at Mr Kenny's residence on Saturday evening, when dairy factory and other matters of local interest were discussed. After considerable discussion as to whether the time had arrived, it was decided to have a co-operative dairy factory erected in the Valley, providing a guarantee of 500 cow 9 should be obtained. A list was taken round in the room and six settlers put their names down for 240 cows. Mr Fuy, of the Bank of New Zealand, Te' Kuiti, being present, was able give the settlers a lot of valuable information in regard to finance. Two men were appointed to canvas the district and there is every probability that the 500 cows will be forthcoming. If the settlers of the Paraheka Valley will only join hands and pull together they will find that there is a great future ahead of them. There is at present enough grass in the Valley for 1000 dairy cows and in a few years this number could be doubled. There has been several bush fires here lately, and good burns are reported. Three is still a considerable amount of bush to be fired. A petition is going around to get the signatures of the various settlers who wish to be transferred from the Ohura to the Waitomo County. There is talk of having some of the roads metalled locally, and we hope to see a great change take place for the better within the next few years. The old slab bridges are gradually giving way to the more substantial I sawn timber one. Some of tfche old ! bridges arc at present in a very dan- | gcrous state and it is hoped they wit! ! be fixed up before any serious accident happens.
