FACIAL ECZEMA IN SHEEP

1 I Learning that some farmers in this i district are having some trouble with j facial eczema amongst their sheep, . | Messrs Mackay and Jones, of this ' | town, wrote Cor information as to Lhe ! treatment, etc., to the manager of a | large station in the south of this : island, whom they knew had experi- . enced the same trouble, and received the following reply, which we publish in the hope that the information may i prove of use to the farmers in this | district: — . ! "Dear Sirs,—Yours of January 7th jto hand re diseased sheep. The : eruption on the face is caused by two distinct forms of disease, so the | Government veterinary surgeons says, i One form is caused by facial eczema | and another form is caused by the sheep nasal bot flv. Eventually, I think, it will be found that all the . trouble is caused by the nasal bot | fly. The remedy prescribed in the ! first instance was smearing the : sheep's face with boracic ointment: j this was afterwards found to be : wrong, and a solution of creoline i substituted on results obtained by !us here. This was two or three ! years ago. Since then, we have found preventive measures to be the i best. If the disease is making its ! appearance, dip AT ONCE and repeat iif necessary as a preventive. If a I whole flock or single paddock of sheep j is largely affected leave them severej ly alone and don't muster them Into ; dusty yards on any account. The Government veterinary surgeons recommended squirting a solution up their noses. It would require a jveterinary surgeon to do it properly: I others have tried it with dasastrous j results. The disease is not infecj tious or contagious."
