OHURA COUNTY COUNCIL.

: The Council met on the ISth inst Present —Crs Stevenson (chairman), Stuart, McKinnon. Wililams, Sandison and Risk. The following correspondence was received from —• Mr Deggerman, explaining his ; failure to accept position as overseer. The Treasury, gazetting rate to pay loan on Waikaka road. • Land Board, granting lease of section 11 block i), town of Mangaroa, to County Council at a rental of £2 per year. Department of Agriculture, giving , notice that they will destroy noxious weeds along Ohura road. Actine Chief Engineer, aeknowledg-

ing receipt of bond for Waitewhena telephone, construction is to be proceeded with at or.ce. Secretary of Public Works, requesting plans for intended works to be taken in hand at once so as to enable work to be undertaken at an early date. Secretary of Farmers' Union, requesting that the mile pegs be continued to the southern boundary of county. Resolved. —That a wire be sent to noxious weeds inspector that blackberry on main road is ripening, and requires cutting; that the attention of the Minister of Public Works be drawn to the dangerous state of the Kururau stream bridge, and that he be urged to have bridge made safe before winter; that "thirds" on Meredith Bros., Tovey Bros., Chapman, Clark Bros., Esdiaie, Fargie and Ronaync's sections be scheduled for removing roots and cutting of points on Hapuna road; that the attention of the Minister be drawn to wash-out on large culvert on Mangaroa-Tongaropo-rutu road; that all "thirds" along Kokpuha road be scheduled for expenditure in widening, forming and culverting being sections held by Messrs Jarvis, Goldfinch, Ryan and Willie; that "thirds" available on G. Denison's section be expended on drain and bank at Mahorahora; that the resident engineer be written to with reference to the dangerous state of the tunnel under Mokau-Ohura road, and culvert in Whenuakura Valley, and if he has any money available for the work; that the Minister of Public Works be written to asking what portion of the £9OOO set forth in the ! last Estimates will be set aside for j the continuance of metalling on the j Ongarue-Ohura road, as we have a j number of teams available for the j work, contracts having been let for j all available grants now in hand. J Waikaka Stream Bridge, Mangaka- j hikatea Road.—Nothing has been j done towards erection of this bridge, but there is £4OO available for bridge.

Road Vote Mangakara Road. —The following letter from the resident engineer explains how votes are subdivided;—"in reply to your memo, of the 22nd ult., the amount voted this year is £IOOO, but this includes £93 lis (that is £94 in nearest pounds) authorised to you 30th March, 1910, thus leaving £906, of this amount £BSO was authorised to you on the 12th September last, leaving £56, for which on the loth November last you we e invited to submit proposals." Ohura Defence Rifle Club. —Application was made by the secretary of the club for a subsidy of £lO for improvements to range. Resolved that there were no funds available.

Deputation.- -A deputation of settlers from Kiakahi road waited on the council to urge the need of the work being clone at once. The available "thirds" have been scheduled for expenditure and they were anxious to have the work done before the winter, j The chairman assured them as soon as ] the engineer was able he would take out the quantities and have the work done. The required timber had been ordered and would be on the ground in a fortnight. Turoto Road "Thirds." —Mr Hope wrote asking that the available "thirds" be expended as the settlers were willing to do the work. Resolved that the work be done at once under a ganger. Waikaka Road. —The resident engineer wrote that a petition had been received to have the available vote expended in giving access to certain sections and under these circumstances the Council was requested to amend proposals and submit proposals for bridle track extension. Resolved that the Council urge the expenditure of vote 011 widening on plans submitted and refuse to undertake any bridle track, and that the resident engineer's attention be drawn to the fact that several settlers in the Waikaka are without access, and that their petition did not include the amount voted for widening. Kakahi Stream Bridge.— Instructions are now being issued to the resident engineer to proceed with work. The unexpended balance of authority held by the Council being cancelled.

Tokirima-Kaikara Road. —Resolved that vote be returned to department as resident engineer will not approve of plans supplied by county engineer. Tokirima-Wanganui Koac!.—-Dans of this work, •]:! chains widening, were received and approved of on 11th October, 1010 and authority was issued to the Council in October. No plans have been received from the ollice by the County engineer. Waikaka Road. — Trail grades for this road were submitted and returned by the resident engineer, as he couid not approve of proposed alteration, ■"Thirds" to the value of £sl(i ISa Id were approved by Commissioner of Crown Lands and are available for expenditure in the various ridings. ' Mangaparere Road. —Resident engineer again refused to have vote expended us recommended by Council, j Resolved that the vote be returned to - department, for expenditure. Ohuru Koad .Metalling. Resident engineer wrote that papa should be broken to 1-gauge for metalling main ro ad. The position jf road overseer has been offered to T. Harland, out of 18 j applicants. j

County Engineer. The County j engineer tendered his resignation in J terms of his agreement.— Accepted. | Metalling Contracts.—Contract No. i 26, J. Kaspar, for metalling Huhatahi flat, was accepted; Contract Mo. 27, metalling Waitewhena road, E. Pawson, accepted. Rates. —Resolved that all rates un- : pai.l by the loth February be sued for. i Alterations of Boundaries. A scheme for the proposed alteration I was arranged taking in part of Clifton ; County and placing part of Ohura County in the Waitomo County, and ; that part of the Opatu block be transferred from Whangamornona County.
