Te Kuiti Volunteer Fire Brigade intends to send representatives to the Hokitika Fire Brigade demonstration, to be held from March 3rd onwards for nearly a fortnight. Hokitika is in Westland, and 184 miles from Christchurch, and the expense of sending half a dozen men to represent Te Kuiti is naturally a heavy one. The object in sending representatives is to educate the men in the best methods of fire : fighting and fira brigade work. The Fir; Brigades' Association pays all tiaveiling experses, but the representatives going will have to bear the expenses of living whilst in Hokitika. They are sacrificing their ; time in going that long distance to work for the benefit of Te Kuiti property owners, and they are making a public appeal f-jr contributions to help to defray part of their expenses. Property-own ;rs particularly are invited to assist, as by helping the brigade they are helping themselves. A well-organised local brigade saves property, saves life, and saves insurances. Subscription liits are now being circulated. Fishing enthusiasts will be pleased to hear of a little incident that occurred recently in the Waikato, about four miles below Tuaku. Th= Maoris resident thereabouts are in the habit of netting certain small fish in the river, and for some time they had been puzzled by taking among the others some fish they could not identify, and the wholesomeness of which are said to have suspected. A few days ago some of them appealed to a passer-by to tell them what the fish were. The man was one of the Acclimatisation Society's rangers, and he immediately threw the fish back into the water. They were healthy young rainbow trout, from 6in to Bin in length, and the ranger has reported that they are remarkably plentiful in the Waikato river. Three or four years ago the rainbow trout wore all cleared out of the river by the big flood. Since then several introductions of fry have been effected, and the success of the re-stocking is viewed with great p>"sure by those anglers v.ygp know >'
