- Tenders are now being called by t]ie Borough Council for works in connection wjth the lean —thup inaugurating works which we hops wii! benefit the ratepayers of Te Kufti. We j understand that during the next few J days the Borough engineer will be in ! a position to call for tenders for over j a mile of formation and metalling. | The usual fortnightly meeting of the I'rkie of Te Ivuiti Lodge, U.rV0.1)., ; was held last evening, Bro. iassell ■ presiding. 'lhere was a good attendance of members and visiting brethren were present from Star of Greymouth Lodge and Star of Hawera Lodge. ; After considerable routine business was transacted Bro. Lindsay gave a ! short address explaining how the i Lodge which he belongs to progresses, j The address w r as listened to very at- j

tentively, and the local branch hopes i to benefit thereby. Bro. 15 ay ley, Star j of Hawera Lodge, also gave said a : few words. The ordinary meeting of Te Kniti Fire Brigade was held on Monday : evening, Supt. Nicholson presiding | over a full attendance. Several mat- | ters of importance to the brigade were discussed and accounts passed for pay- j ment ? and the meeting adjourned till ; Monday evenijig, when a practise | will be held. j Arrangements are being made to hold a garden party in connection with Te Kuiti Anglican Church. The function will be held in the school grounds on Thursday, 26th January. Full particulars will appear in t.'ie next issue of the "Chronicle." It is understood that a brick-mak'ng industry will be started in Te K-'iti shortly. There is certainly a j.ood opening for such an industry. j

The work of removing a portion of the railway gcods-shed to a site <>t the i rear of the present location of the railway station was carried out on I Sunday, so as not to interfere with \ the running of trains.

Terriers have been called for the erection of the Ongarue Bridge. Great satisfaction will be felt by ail interested in this much-neejed structure. Settlers will find it very much more convenient and expeditous to cross their stock by this bridge than by wading the stream as was of necessity the case, formerly. At Monday's meeting of Te Kuiti Borough. Council the engineer was instructed to caii for tenders for the new footbridge leading to the bowling green, and the works committee was authorised to open the tenders and let the contract. Mr Fred Morton, whose leg was so badly crushed in the accident near Mangapsehi on Saturday, had to have the limb amputated on arrival at the Waikato Hospital. Mr John Tammadge, coroner, held an inquest on Saturday on the body of Peter Joyce, who met his death near i Mangapeehi, as detailed in our Saturi day's issue. A verdict in accordance with the evidence was given, and a recommendation made to the company that no passenger should be allowed to travel on the engine in future. Mr and Mrs Frank White gave a very enjoyable social evening at their residence in Maniapoto street on Thursday evening, to commemorate | the opening of their new business | premises. Music and the usual games | were indulged in, the guests afteri wards adjourning to partake of a j sumptuous banquet in an adjoining | part of the residence. Among those present were Miss Naughton, Misses Board (2), Misses Kiiaire (2). from Auckland, Miss Parkes, Miss Hunter,Mr and Sirs H. M. Quin, Mr and Mrs Brunton, Miss Reardon, Mrs Reynolds, Mrs Rhodes, Mrs Frank Forster, Mr Wm. YVorthington, Mr Bnrchell, Mr F. Prime, Mr Board, Mr Hawkins, and Mr Ben Board. —Own Correspondi ent.

Messrs Hyde and Co., brewers and bottlers, Tc Awamuui, have just secured the services of Mr W. Cowan, as brewer, for the firm. Mr Cowan j is the son cf Mr H. Cowan, managing ! director and brewer for the North ! Island Brewery Co., Mangatainoka, I Wairarapa. There are few older ; brewers in New Zealand than Mr H. j Cowan. He was for many years conI nected with Dr Logan Campbell, and : secured many medals for the company, I a fine gold one of which still remains ! in his possession, a presentation from ; the kindly doctor. Mr YV. Cowan was for about seven years under his father, I and acquired a thorough knowledge of brewing. It is to be hoped that he will produce beer equal to the "Tui" brand, now famous ir; the Wairarapa : for its quality and excellence, and for ! which I\lr Cowen. senr., has secured so extensive a market. It was "Tui" stout that Powelka imbibed so freely on the eve of his capture, 'when he burgled the Ashhurst goods shed. "Powelka''' stout was a name that stuck to it for quite a long time, long after the sensation caused by the many escapades ot the unfortunate criminal had caesed to occupy the public mind. ;
