FATAL ACCIDENT AT MANGAPEEHI.
BUSHMAN KILLED. HIS MATE WOUNDED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) Mnngapehi, This Day. A sad accident, invoking loss cf life and serious injuries, took place at Mangapeehi this morning. It appears that Peter Joyce, aged about 28, and Fred Morton, bushmen, were riding on the front of a locomotive going up an incline on Messrs EiJis and Bnrnand's tramway line, and collided with a truck of navvies coming down, Joyce had both his legs badly crushed, and died shortly after reaching Mangapeehi. Morton had one leg badly crushed below the knee, and is suffering from a compound fracture. He was put on the 10 a.m. express, and taken to the Waikato Hospital.
Great praise is due to the mates of the dead and injured men, who travelled five miles with the truck in bringing them in to Mangapeehi. Tom Munro, the guard, and Dan Edwards, the driver, may be specially mentioned as doing ail in their power to help the sufferers.
