[j!Y TKX-KGKArU. —j'RKSS ASSOCIATION".] Carterton, This Day. A sad occurrence took place at Taumata Island, Waihakeke, yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock, when Louisa Ann Nicholls, of Wairoa, Hawke's Bay, was drowned in the Ruamahunga river. She, in company with her aunt, Mrs Gates, and two other women went swimming. Miss Nicholls and Miss Patterson suddenly walked over a ledge into 20 feet of water. Miss Nicholls could not swim and almost immediately sank. Miss Patterson eam a little, and with the assistance of the other ladies, got to land. The body of Miss Nicholls was recovered two hours later. The Ruamahunga is a most treacherous river, anrrow, shallow ledges separating extremely deep holes.
