VALEDICTORY.
On Friday evening last at Marakopa when the entertainment following the annual schools picnic was being held, opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mr W. F. Dines, the Moeatoa teacher, who is leaving the district to carry out his duties in another part of the province. Mr P. W. Bell, in making the presentation .pJ: a case of pipes on behalf of the settlers and residents of the district to Mr Dines, referred to the energetic manner in which he had entered into their social, athletic and local affairs. All wished Mr Dines farewell and success in the future. Mr Dines, in reply, thanked thDse ladies and gentlemen present and other donors for their gift and kind appreciation. He also congratulated them for knowing how to keep a secret as the presentation was a great surprise. Mr Dines referred to the cordial and kindly feelings displayed towards him by setllers since his arrival in the district. Their beautiful gift would be a cherished and valued memento of the district and the happy days spent amongst them. The pleasant item concluded by the singing™of "For he's a jolly good fellow." (Mr Dines will temporarily join the "Chronicle" staff for a few weeks after New Year.)
