Marakopa.

Influenza is fairly prevalent at the present time, several residents being placed hors c!e combat by its ravages. Dr Campbell Jenkins, of Kawhia, was in Marakopa on Saturday week to attend to Mrs Willison, who has been indisposed for some time; but under the doctor's care she is now progressing favourably. Mr J. A. Johnson, who some time ago disposed of his farm to Mr A. W. Haylock, has returned from Australia and is re-visiting Marakopa. Mr Johnston, who is an enthusiastic cricketer, played for the Marakopa team in the last match against Kiritehere, and was mainly responsible for the defeat of the latter team.

Cricket seems to be taking on here, there being now a chance of raising a team each from Kairimu, Kiritehere and Marakopa. Last week at Marakopa a cricket match was playad between teams representing Marakopa and Kiritehere. There was a good attendance of spectators and there is every hope that keen enthusiasm will be worked up in favour of the popular summer pastime. The players all show promise and a little later in the season a really good eleven will be able to take the field when it is hoped to arrange a few outside matches. The game was interesting throughout and resulted in a win for the home eleven by 16 runs. Mr W. F. Dines captained the Kiritehere team and Mr Johnson the home eleven. For the winners the Marakopa captain played a great game both at batting and bowling. He was top scorer with 17 runs and was also responsible for taking the major number of Kiritehere wickets. Percy Bell also played well. He made 14 runs and was also succeaful with the ball on a few occasions. G. Howes shows promise as a bowler and J. Pierard as a wicket keeper. For the losers J. Kinnaine was top scorer with 12 runs. R. H. Wynyar bowled well and took a number of wickets, the remainder being taken by F. Klein and the captain. On the whole the Kiritehere team fielded well, as was evidenced by the fact that the home team never scored a single extra.
