MANIAPOTO LAND BOARD.
The Waikato-Maniapoto Maori Land Board, at its recent sitting in Te Kuiti, lasting a week, confirmed dealings, by sale or lease, in native land amounting to 23,555 acres. This area comprises 7025 acres sold, and 16,528 acres leased, all in the King Country. The board's precedent consent, enabling the applicant to proceed with the collection of signatures, was granted in respect of 5189 acres, comprising 2363 acres by way of sale, and 2826 acres by way of sale, and 2526 acres by way of lease. Meetings of assembled owners were authorised to deal with two applications for leases, 1240 acres and 252 acres. A resolution passed by a meeting of assembled owners was confirmed, agreeing to sell 2000 acres to R. Julian.
With regard to the confirmed sales and leases referred to in the first paragraph, the areas sold number 21, the three largest being 1642 acres, H. F. Julian; 1518 acres. W. N. Sturges, who also, with other persons, purchases an area of 325 acres and another of 189 acres; 1139 acres, R. P. Hill; and 946 acres, D. H. Lusk. The largest leasehold acreages are 2652, H. H. McVilly;' 2289, J. L. Grogan; 2000, G. S. Steadman; 1774, M. V. E. Hughes; 1275, J. H. Broadfoot; 1198, V. E. Goldwater; 1038, J. McCready; 962, W. W. Albrechtsen; and 922, A. M. McCardle. The lack of survey has hitherto been one of the great barriers to the settlement of native lands. The Maori Land Boards now have power to make requisitions for surveys to the Lands and Survey Department, and it is an important point that the WaikatoManiapoto Board has now made requisitions for survey of about 45 areas, aggregating 53,000 acres.
