High Commissioner's Cable.
The High Commissioner's cabled market report, dated London, Ist October, is as follows (quotations, unless otherwise specified, being average market prices on spot) : Mutton. —The market remains firm, and stocks are firmly held in few hands. There is less demand, and high prices are restricting business. The average price to-day for Canterbury mutton in 4|d; North Island, 4d. Lamb.—The market is firm, with small supply, but the demand is falling off, as "the season is ending. The average price to-day for New Zealand lamb, Canterbury, is sgd; other than Canterbury, s&d. Beef. —The market is quiet, but rather steadier, stocks being heavy. The average price to-day for New Zealand beef is: Hindquarters, 3Jd; forequarters, 2|d, Butter.—the market is quiet, but firm, for best quality. Buyers are cautious. New Zealand, 115s (nominal) ; Victorian, 115s; Danish, 116s; Siberian, 105s.
Hemp. —The market is quieter, and business is dull, with no change in prices. New Zealand good to fair on spot, per ton, £24 10s; fair grade, £2l 10s; fair current Manila on spot, per ton, £2l. The Manila output last week was 34,000 bales. Kauri Gum.—The market is slightly weaker, with less demand. Ordinary to fair three-quarters scraped, £8 10s; fair to half-scraped, £5 ss; brown fair half to three-quarters scraped, £4 10s; brown pickings, common to good, £2 ss; bush, fair to good, pale and amber, scraped, £8 13s,
