DR MAKGILL IN TE KUITI.
Yesterday Dr Makgill, chief health officer for the Auckland district, accompanied by the town clerk and the consulting engineer, made an inspection of the proposed catchment area for the water supply and the various sites in the borough for general purposes. Dr Makgill first inspected the septic tank site near the Domain, and taking all things into consideration, thought it a very suitable site for present needs, subject to slight modification. Te Kumi site was not at present suitable for a septic tank site, but would do admirably for the night soil and refuse depot and as an abbatoir site. On visiting the Waiteti water supply area the doctor carefully took samples o£ the water for analysis and inspected the locality generally. He came to the conclusion that everything, as far as could be seen, was favourable for a pure supply. Returning, the doctor inspected the town. He thinks buildings require watching and advocates a minimum space of a quarter of an acre for residential sites, and generally, sufficient air space so that air should circulate under buildings and prevent damp affecting them. Dr Makgill spoke highly of the sanitary by-laws, describing them as even teaching him something. believes we have a great opportunity in Te Kuiti for starting out on right lines.
