TE KUITI RAILWAY STATION.
A Year's Work. / The following figures (taken from the Railway Statement) show the business done in passenger and goods traffic at Te Kuiti station for the year ending March 31st, 1910: —The station is open 23J hours out of the 24, and employs 9 hands. The traffic expenditure was £1523 6s 3d. The number of tickets issued was 22,033 of a value of £6019 3s 7d. Season tickets numbered 39, valued at £29. The following figures refer to outward business: —Parcels, 2811; horses, 101; carriages, 12; dogs 314; drays, etc., 46; trucks of chaff, etc., S; cattle, 4037; calves, 66; sheep, 23,241; pigs, 34; bales of wool, 1643; trucks of firewood, 176; timber, 2,952,100 feet; grain, 199J tons; merchandise, 772J tons; minerals, 27032 tons; value of goods forwarded, £7409 15s Id; total value of traffic forwarded, £13,929 lis Sd. The inward traffic showed: —Parcels, 5995; horses, 131; carriages, 20; dogs, 575; drays, 57; trucks of chaff, etc., 147; cattle, 3281; calves, 422; sheep, 55,571; pigs, 72; firewood, 97 trucks; timber, 1,170,600 feet; grain, 2779 tons; merchandise, 2612 tons; minerals, 2416 tons. „ For purposes of comparison we give the principal figures for Frankton, Ohaupo, Taihape and Marton in the order named (ignoring shillings ard pence and fractions of tons) : Traffic expenditure, £5386, £543, £3742, £3652: tickets issued, 31,830, 4513, 28,786, 34,144. Outward business: Parcels, 1063, 2507, 4266, 2925; cattle, 2139, 6679, 556, 582; sheep, 15,167, 41,970,39,533, 51,881; timber (feet), 71,400, 11,400, 4,976,100, 73,500; grain (tons), 964, 553, 456, 2452; goods (value forwarded), £2710, £3096, £10,468, £6370; total value of all goods forwarded, £13,069, £4358, £18,491, £15,953. Inward traffic: —Parcels, 4561, 1230, 3823, 4918; cattle, 1316, 4052, 561, 552; sheep, 5906, 41,029, 3980, 9101; timber (feet), 425,500, 243,800, 354,700, 1,563,200; grain (tons), 806, 1353, 1412, 1821; merchandise, 641.. 462, 2043, 1994; minerals, 2328, 3865, 2240, 2994. These comparative figures illustrate the traffic at the principal places of importance between Auckland and Palmurston North, and when it is remembered that Te Kuiti with its population of 1200 is being compared with a special stock centre like Ohaupo; Frankton. an important junction; Taihape, a borough of 2000 inhabitants; and Marton, another important stock centre and junction, our newly-settled district and recently formed borough shows to no disadvantage.
