NATIVE TOWNTHIPS BILL

When the House went into Committee on the Native Townships Bill on Tuesday last, Mr W. H. Herries (Tauranga) moved an amendment to clause 19, to allow the natives to sell the freehold with the consent of the Native Land Board to lessees as well as to the Crown. The amendment was lost by 37 votes to 29. Mr W. T. Jennings (Taumarunui) moved to add a sub-clause to clause 20, as follows: "The Crown may sell any land so acquired to any tenant thereof under lease granted by the Maori Land Board, and every such tenant who has occupied and improved such land shall have preference of purchase.
