PORK FOR EXPORT.

At the conclusion of his" address before the shareholders of the Taranaki Freezing Works Company on Saturday, Mr Mills, in reply to a question from Mr C. Bates, of Kaponga, spoke of the prospects of New Zealand's export of pork to the Home market. Mr Mills said: "New Zealand bacon, can and has been shipped Home, arrived in good condition, and has given satisfaction to the customers, therefore demonstrating that there is a market at Home for New Zealand bacon. If you go on raising pigs now," he continued, "you are on a good wicket. The meat can be shipped as pork (with pigs from 601b to 1001b), or as bacon (1201b to 1801b). The bacon trade here has proved to be a practical success and an outlet for it now is assured. There is no doubt that New Zealand is going to occupy a very big place in raising pork and bacon for Home consumption." Replying to further questions from Mr Marfell, Mr Mills said: "The value of bacon to-day is exceedingly high, for the reason that our natural supplies are shrinking. The United States a few years ago was sending 4000 tons a week to the Old Country, and when I left Home the ipiports were only 750 tons a week. To-day, bacon from Denmark is worth 76s to 78s a cwt.,' and American bacon is from 66s to 70s. New Zealand is rather better than American, for there the pigs are maize-fed, and maize-fed pork doesn't make good bacon. Of course, your pigs would need to be well fed and topped off with a little hard feed."
