BENICIA REVERSIBLE DISC PLOUGHS.
On Thursday Mr C. B. Lever conducted an exhibition of the working of a Benicia reversible disc plough. A number of leading settlers attended during the day and were much impressed with the excellent work done by the implement. The hillside selected was very hard, rough and slippery, in places full of furze, briar and ti-tree roots, and had never before been broken up, but the plough went through it in good style and thoroughly convinced the onlookers that it is the implement most suitable for this class of work. The holding qualities of the plough were conclusively proved by the fact that in some places the" grade of the hill was as steep as 2 in 1, and even on this steep grade the operator kept his seat on the implement. The plough was also worked on a piece of land that had been cropped last season and made a really excellent job, turning the furrows over in a perfect manner. The special feature of the Benicia is the simplicity of its reversing action, the driver merely touches a lever with his foot and swings the horses round, the wheels and disc being automatically adjusted for the return journey. The plough is very simple in design of light draft and runs easy.
A boy talking in his sleep has led to his being rewarded by the presentation of a testimonial from the Royal Humane Society. Some boys were bathing in Portmadoc harbour, and David Evans, aged 12, was carried into a whirlpool eight feet deep near the harbour flood gates. Teddy Williams, who is only 13, swam to his rescue, and, after a hard fight, brought him ashore. The boys resolved to say nothing about the incident. The secret, however, leaked out through Evans, who had not missed school for eight years and had received a silver watch for regular attendance, being too unwell next clay to attend school, and through Williams waking up, shouting, "A rope, a rope, to save David." There is a general air of prosperity throughout Tarankai. Eltham anj Stratford are both moving ahead in a solid way. The former town bids fair to have some of the most substantial buildings in the provinces, concrete being largely in evidence for business premises.
