Waikaka.
A number of road contracts have been let in this district by the Ohura County Council recently, and I hear that a high level bridge is to be erected over the Waikaka river, connecting the Mangakahiketea road and the Waikaka road. This bridge, when erected, will be a great convenience to settlers on both sides of the Waikaka river. > We have had some very heavy rain here of late, which is likely to have a detrimental effect on young lambs. Mr McPlierson, engineer for the Ohura County Council, was' through here lately on a tour of inspection in connection with roads and bridges. He was acompanied by Cr Stuart, member for Otangiwai riding. Mr James Phillips brought in a nice line of hoggets the other day. They were purchased at Feildir/gand trucked to Ongarue and notwithstanding the present state of the roads, look none the worse for their journey. Cattle is a thing of the past as far this district is concerned, as the majority of the settlers are going in for sheep farming. Another large native lease has recently been acquired on the Waikaka by Mr Luke, of Taranaki. Another large block has been secured by Mr Hardy, of Te Kuiti. Messrs Seccombe Bros, have recently laid out four miles of fencing. All the posts and strainers on the line are heart of totara. When erected, this fence will be the only one of the kind in the district.
