Kiritehere-Moeatoa.
There are many that seem to run away with the idea that the Kiritehere, Pomerangi and Mangahoe districts consider tha't Te Kuiti is interested in the Marakopa river.. It is a mistaken one: what those settlers really object to is the Northern portion of Awakino county being merged into Kahwia thus robbing them of their natural valuable asset. Settlers in this and surrounding districts believe that the Marakopa river, if governed by Kawhia, would not be administered to their benefit. What they want is to control the river themselves. They consider they are best fitted to do so because the river is their natural outlet. This has been their policy from the very beginning—the improvement of the Marakopa river—but not by being merged into the Kawhia county. The proposal which emanated from Messrs Stanley and Hally months ago that these local districts be formed into a small county going on the south side to the Waikawau stream and on the north side to the Kawhia harbour, is the one and only solution for thn district. Then, the Marakopa river would be in the centre and the interests of Marakopa township enhanced. The interest which settlers have in Te Kuiti are plain to be seen and impossible to get away from for many reasons well known. The idea of forming a small county is nothing new, but those who were in favour of going into Kawhia had to be checked, resulting in nothing of a tangible form being done by those most desirous of improving the Marakopa waterway.
