The High Commissioner cables from London as follows:
Mutton —The market is weak. Although the supply is only moderate, there is poor local demand. The average prices to-day are: Canterbury 3§d, North Island 3£d. Lamb—The market is steady, with better demand, and holders are less anxious to sell. Canterbury 4gd, other than Canterbury 4§d. Beef—There is better demand, and the market is firm, with a hardening tendency. Supplies of chilled beef are small. New Zealand hindquarters 3£d, forequarters 2£d. Butter —The market is quiet, but steady. Good demand continues for best quality. The supply of New Zealand is practically exhausted. Butter prospects for the next season are encouraging. Danish 114s, Siberian 100s.
Cheese- The market is steady, with improved demand. White 575, coloured 555.
Hemp—The market is dull and declining, and poor busniess has been done. New Zealand good to fair on spot £24, fair grade £2l 10s, fair current Manila £2O 10s, forward shipment New Zealand, good to fair £23 10s, fair grade £2l, fair current Manila' £2O 10s. The output from Manila for the week was 25,000 bales. Wheat —The market is firmer, owing to the wet season. New Zealand longberried wheat on spot ex granary, per quarter of 4961b5, 34s 6d; New Zealand short-berried, 33s 6d. Oats—The market is very quiet. New Zealand oats, short (Sparrowbills), ex granary, on spot, per quarter of 3841b5, 18s; New Zealand oats, Danish ex granary, on spot, per quarter cf 3201b-}, 16s 6d. Beans —The market is quiet, but steady. New Zealand beans, f.a.q. (new crop), per 5041b5, 355. Peas —The market is weaker, and large supplies are coming forward. New Zealand peas (partridge), per 5041b5, 445.
Cocksfoot Seed —The market is depressed, and buyers are not keen to do business. The average price of bright clean New Zealand cocksfoot seed, weighing 171b per bushel, on spot, per cwt., is 635. Wool—The market remains firm.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. report: — At Ngaruawahia on Friday, July 29th, we yarded 540 store cattle and 180 dairy cows and heifers. There was good competition throughout and all store cattle soH. A large number of the 2J to 3| year steers went to a Te Puke buyer. The demand for dairy stock was keen especially for the whole dairies of Messrs Waring and Pollock, and any well-grown heifers to calve early, 3 to 3J year steers made from £5 10s to £6, 1\ to 3 year steers £4 13s to £5 4s, fat cows £5 5s to £6 2s 6d, 2 year steers £3 12s to £4, yearling steers, choice £3, calves, wellgrown mixed sexes £2 5s to £2 lis, others 31s 6d to 40s, 2 year empty heifers £3 to £3 15s, empty cows in fresh condition £3 Is to £3* 7s 6d, store cows £2 7s to £2 155.. dairy cows (whole dairies) due August and September £7 10s to £9, later £6 5s to £7, 3 year springing heifers £5 10s to £6 10s, others more backward £4 to £4 17s 6d, young cows from various vendors £4 to £6 10s, aged cows not wanted.
On Monday, Ist inst., we held a clearing sale at Ngaroto on account of Mr E. H. Little. Full-mouth ewes in ■lamb made 14s lid, ewe hoggets 9s lOd, wether hoggets 8s 9d, store wethers 13s 9d, dairy cows £5 5s to £8 10s, yearling Jersey £3 Is to £3 2s 6d, buggy cob £6 10s. At Ohaupo, on Tuesday, 2nd inst., we yarded 480 dairy cows and heifers. Four year bullocks in forward condition made £7 to £B, 3 year olds £5 19s, 18 months to 2 year olds £3 9s to £3 13s, yearling £2 8s to £2 9s, calves 32s to 38s, fat cows £5 2s 6d to £5 15s, empty cows £2 lis to £3 15s according to condition, dairy cows young and sound £6 10s to £8 10s, others more aged £4 7s 6d to £5 15s, springing heifers £5 5s to £6.
Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Auckland, report as under on their Westfield fat stock market: —-Beef — A moderate entry, prices much the same as last sale except for medium quality which was slightly easier. Choice ox sold at equal to 26s per hundred, ordinary quality prime ox at 22s to 235, cow and heifer at 20s to 25s per hundred. Veai —A moderate entry sold at up to £4 lis for extra heavy, ordinary 30s to 50s, small 6s to 12s. Mutton —An average entry. Prices wore much the same as previous two weeks. Extra heavy vvet.hers sold at up to 25s tid, ordinary prime wethers 19s to 2'Zs. inferior quality 14s (id to 17s 6d, extra good heavy ewes to 23s Gd, ordinary 14a to 17s, moderate and inferior 9s to 13s. T,amb —An "average entry, heavy sold at up to 14s, medium 10s to 12s 6d, inferior 4s 6d to 7s.
