SPECIAL MEETING.

Rates. —The clerk stated that a penny rate would yield £2402 3s Id; a |d rate £IBO3 Is Id; a £d rate £l2Ol Is; and aJd rate £6OO 10s 9d, not including native property. Cr Boddie moved that for Te Kuiti nnd Waitomo, Otorchanga and Te Rau-a-Moa ridings the rate be one penny in the £, and for Mairoa, Hangatiki, Aria and Paemako ridings threefarthings in the £.' Cr Johnston seconded.—Carried unanimously.

Mangaotaki "Thirds."—Cr Boddie said that they were going thoroughly into this matter. A number of items had been scheduled and not spent. —It was decided to ask the committee to bring up their complete report at the next meeting of the Council. The chairman said there was the question of Government grants to go into. The Minister had given them the assurance that if they spread their demands over three or four years they would get the grants they asked for. Individual Councillors should go into this. Cr Boddie said they should ask for a reasonable subsidy for the main works they were proposing. The matter should be pushed on as quickly as possible. He moved that a committee, consisting of himself and the chairman, "be set up to consider the requirements of the County, and any member of the Council so wishing to send lists of the needs of his district.—Carried.

Otorohanga-Kihikihi Road. Cr Gregg said that this rosd was at present impassable in parts.—The matter was left in his hands to deal with. Insurance. —It was decided to insure the new offices and furniture in the State Fire Office for £350.

Engineer's Report. The County engineer reported having made surveys for the expenditure of grants on the Arapae, Tapuae, Turitea, Mangamohe and Otorohanga-Waitomo roads and having prepared plans and specifications for widening the Arapae, Tapuae and Turitea roads, which had been sent to the Public Works Department for approval. Those for the Otorohahga-Waitomo road were almost complete. Tenders had been called for works on the Arapae, Kumara and Tumutumu roads, and tenders were now called for the deepening ofdrains on the Kawa road. No tenders had been accepted for work on the Arapae and Tumutumu roads, as they were considerably above the estimate. The contracts in hand were progressing very well, «onsidering the amount of rain recently. Two men had been put on the Otorchanga-Pirongia road to fill in the holes and clear out the watertables. He had had a dangerous place on the Hauturu-Otorohanga road repaired and a culvert put in near Otorohanga, on the Ouruwhero road. Finance Report.- The Finance Committee reported that the credit balance at the bank stood at £1703 5s 3d, and the amount due on account of Government grants was £BO2 16s 4d. Receipts during the past month totalled £224 12s Id, made up of general rates £94 17s 9d, and -Government grants £i29 12s 6d. Te Kuiti loan account had a credit of 2s lOd, Waitomo County Interest account credit £62 19s 4d; Mangacrino road construction loan acount credit £55 19s lid.
