The Te Kuiti Fire Brigade intetida holding a grand plain and fancy dresa ball in aid of the funds on Thursday, August 11th. Prijses for the moßt original • costumes are promised and also for a waltzing competition. The object is of first-class importance. The brigade is doing valuable voluntary work, and the ball deserves to be largely supported. We hope it will be. The Homo Missioner in charge of the Church of England Home Mission -district of Taumarunui, asks us to state for the benefit of Ohura readers that he has arranged to hold services in the Ohura on the first Sunday of each month in future. The new ar« rangement takes effect from next month, this month's ssrviecs being held at Mangaroa and Matiere on Sunday next as usual. Communion will be -given in each centre alternately, and the evening service for the time being will always be held'at Matiere, with afternoon service in Mangaroa. The "Dannevirke Evening News" of July Ist, reports a pleasing function given in honour of Mr T. G. Hosking, Solicitor, of Ormondville, who recently moved to Otorohanga, whera here is now practising his profession. Some 80 friends assembled and a number of speeches were delivered, one speaker commenting on Mr Hosking's association with the local sporting bodies, including cricket, football, hockey, tennis and billiards. The presentation of nn illuminated address from members of the Episcopal Church took place during the evening, in which reference was made to Mr Hosking's help as choir master. Mr Hosking will be an acquisition to Otorohanga. A successful experiment has been tried by a settler on fern land in the south to provide winter feed for sheep. Instead .of laying down a paddock in turnips, he sowed Cape barley on the 30th March, and in six weeks t&ere was sufficient growth to feed off. fhis area can be stocked at internals • throughout tha winter and cjther ploughed in or altawed to run lip to straw. > v / • i
