JOHNSON v. JEFFRIES.
White Man Outclassed. BEATEN IN 15 ROUNDS. There was immense excitement at Reno on Independence Day (July 4th) when, before an enormous gathering the representatives of the black and white, races met to decide the world's - ' •heavyweight championship. Tremendous cheers greeted Jeffries as he entered the ring, and Johnson, too, got hearty support. The fight, scheduled for 45 rounds, commenced at 2.44 p.m., and wbb one-Hided from the start. Round one brought out Johnson's "golden smile," but was otherwise, tame. In the second round Jeffries landed a solid right in the negro's mid-section, but it did not. trouble Johnson, who landed twice on Jerffies' face. In the third round scientific boxing was displayed by Johnson, who stopped all blows. In the fourth round Jeffries got a head blow in and got a stiff left in the mouth in return. An exchange of blows marked the fifth round and caution was shown by both men in the sixth round, but Johnson ladned frequently on Jeffries face, closing hiß right eye. In the seventh round the black champion repeatedly landed on Jeffries' flora face and closed eye, shaking his white opponent severely. In the eighth round Jeffries landed two heavy lefts on Johnson's face. The ninth round was all in Johnson's favour; the tenth round wbb lifelecs but in the black's favour; in the eleventh round Jeffries became wild and landed hard on Johnson, but the negro, as cool and unruffled as ever, irove in left and right, hard and often. The twelfth was a punishing round for Jeffries and the thirteenth and fourteenth too, and it was now evident the end had come. Johnson had all the best of the fighting and with a terrific swing he sent the white man to the boards. "Nine," counted the timekeeper, and the right was over, Jeffries failing to rise and Johnson retaining his title of heavyweight' champion.
