Marakopa.

Mr F. D. "Haylock, who has built a launch to-'fun on the Marakopa river, landed a four-horse power Standard oil engine by a recent trip of the Rothesay, which he is fitting into the new craft. There will be a considerable increase in traffic on the river with the advent of the dairy factory which is within meEsurable distance at the present time, the financial part of the busniess having been arranged by Mr Stanley, chairman of directors, on his recent trip to Auckland. The s.p. Rothesay; which has been running to this port very regularly of late, took away on her last trip a large consignment of cheese made by Mr Charles. Haylock. The boat race, Which took place on Saturday/June Uth, for the Willison Cup, resulted in a good contest, the challengers (Messrs Vicary and Hunter) being defeated by three lengths by Armitage Bros., holders of the cup. Mrs Willison gave a very successful euchre party at her residence on June lltb, when despite the unfavourable weather there were a good number present,' who put in a most enjoyable evening. Dancing was started about 10 o'clock and kept up with great spirit till daylight. One party, which left by launch about 2 a.m., had an uncomfortable experience owing to the propeller getting foul of a flax bush on the bank and were kept on the river for an hour or two till the obstruction was removed.

Mr L E. Armitage, of Te Anga, who has built a house on his section, is to be married shortly to Miss Rose Carr, of Marakopa. The flotation of the Kawhia South Farmers'" Saleyards Company, Ltd., will very shortly be an accomplished fact, sufficient capital having been subscribed to warrant the directors in proceeding to register under the Companies' Act. At the last meeting of directors held at Te Anga, on 26th June, the articles of association as drnwn up by Mr Swarbrick, of Hamilton, were discussed, and after being amended in one or two minor particulars were signed and returned to be registered. The directorate at the present time consists of Messrs Stanley, Haylock, Thomas, Ross, Derecourt, Fairfax and Smith, the lastnamed being elected to fill the place rendered vacant by the unavoidable absence of Mr Percy Rose. The directors intend, as soon as legal requirements have been complied with, to call tenders for the supply of timber and erection of yards at or near Te Anga. It is not expected that there will be much difficulty in getting auctioneering firms to do business at these yards, although the distance from the railway may be a handicap for a time.

The manager of the Sank of Australasia paid a flying visit to Marakopa last week in connection with the business of financing the butter factory, coming in by way of the Kiritehere Valley, and departing by. the Mangapohue road, which latter road very much wants the attention of the Roads Department. Mr Kelso was well pleased with the country and passed through en route, but thought that the state of the roads left much to be desired, and so say all of us. A meeting of settlers is to be held at Mr Hally's bouse at Moeatoa, upper Kiritehere to protest against the inclusion of a portion of Awakino County in Kawhia County and proceedings are expected to be lively. The settlers in that part of the County are taking a fair and legitimate course in calling a public meeting to discuss the matter, and though satisfaction for all can hardly be hoped for, the meeting may be productive of much good.
