The pasteurisation of milk has been lately condemned by experts, who aver that the milk thus treated only spoils and becomes rotten without decaying. It is consequently being abandoned for medical use.

There are now two hundred newspaper correspondents in Reno, Nevada, recording the final preparations for the world's heavyweight championship between Jeffries and Johnson, compared with twelve American correspondents sent to the Russo-Japanese war. The fight takes place-on Monday. Mr W. T. Jennings, M.P., who has been collecting facts regarding the mortality of Parliamentarians, is a strong advocate of daylight hours for Parliament, or, at any rate, the carrying out of at least half its work in sunlight. "Why not follow the good example of the Californian Senate?" he asked a reporter, when discussing the question of a lgeislative methods. "There they sit from noon till mid- 1 night. Here's 4 another thing that kills a member,'" he continued, pulling three or four big handfulls of correspondence out of his letterbox. "My average for the year is 3000 letters, and this is my start for the session. I have a district of 6000 square miles—a cruel thing. I v am bound to see the electors once a year at least, so you can imagine what that means in the way of travelling." The following are the winners of the first Tonking's contest, each having forwarded word lists containing the maximum number of word and each bearing the earliest post mark. On Thursday afternoon a well attended meeting of the ladies of St. Luke's Church was held. The Rev. E. S. Wayne explained to the meeting that it is necessary to make the district which is at present helped by the Home Mission fund, into a self-sup-porting parochial district, and also to enlarge the church as soon as possible. The Rev. H. Wingfield is very kindly drawing a suggested plan for a church, of which it is proposed to erect the Chancel as soon as possible, using the present building as the Nave, so providing extra seating accommodation at once, and in time to complete the new plan, leaving the present church to be used as a Sunday School and Parish Hall. The hearty cooperation of the ladies was promised. The ladies' sewing guild resolved to begin work at once, Mrs Wayne being appointed president, Mrs Hitchcock secretary, and Mrs White treasurer. Mesdames Bond and Johnson, Misses Grattan and Mussen, also agreed to act as collectors of all sum 9 promised by parishioners in aid of the stipend fund. The thanks of the vicar and ladies are due. to Mr Lever for so kindly lending his room for the meeting.
