Maagapehi.
A very successful school concert was held on Friday evening. 24th June. This was the fourth of its kind held locally and was voted the best of them all. Certainly the residents seemed to think so, for they rolled up to the number of 120, a fact which goes to prove the growth of thia district. The sum of £9 23 was taken at the door, to be devoted chiefly to improving the local school playground. The children took their parts well, and fully justified the pains the headmaster, Mr B. W. Hayson, and the assistant, Miss W. Johnson, had taken with them. The opening overture was rendered
- by Miss Winnie Gornly. a fifth stan- . dard girl, who displayed a good knowp ledge of the piece selected. The second item was a part song entitled "Brocklet on the Plain," by six children, whose voices blended beautifully, and no mistakes were made. An exhibition of Bayonet Drill by a squad of six of the biggest boys followed. The action was like clcck-work, and the item was vociferously encored. Miss Violet Barreyatt next rendered a long and pathetic recitation, "The Land of Gold," exceedingly weil. An exhibition of Wand* Drill by eight girls looked very pretty and was well executed, Mis 3 Johnson having taken a great deal of pains with the item. The girls were dressed uniformly in white, and wore red shoulder sashes. The wands were white and were ornamented with red bows and small bells. A Maori girl, Miss Mihi Tiriana, next rendered a song in the Native tongue, very sweetly, which was followed by a fan song and drill by eight of the tiny girls, entitled "In the days of Queen Anne." The little dots were loudly
applauded for their efforts. Miss Gladys Barreyatt next gave a piano --solo in accomplished style. A physical and manual drill exercise with guns by the squad of boys, was as before, without a flaw, they again being encored. "Little Dora's Soliloquy," given by Miss Ruby McDonald, concluded the first half of the programme, and she was loudly encored. The second half was devoted to the rendering of a delightful little half-hour comedietta, entitled "It's an ill wind that blows nobody good." The parts were taken by Winnie Gornly, a3 Fanny Myrtle; Josephine Bates, a3 Mrs Myrtle; Alec. Stewart, as Mr Croesus; Wilfred Stewart, as Paul Edmonds; William Summers, as the landlord, Mr Boniface; and Albert Rolland, as the Irish waiter, Michael O'Grady. The histrionic talent displayed was of a very good order, each child taking its V part as well as any adult could have done.' Albert Rolland, with his brogue and funny mistakes, kept the audience in roars of laughter whenever he was on the stage. At the conclusion the hall was cleared and dancing was maintained for a few hours. JJrs Harris and Messrs Hogg and Kernot very kindly vo'urjteerjng the tnusie. At a general meeting of married men held the other evening, it was decided to give a benedicts' plain and fancy dress ball on 22nd July. An energetic committee, Messrs Seymour, Busier, Stewart, Hayson, tetchy Nankerville, W. McDonald and Urick, were elected "to carry things through. Messrs Buttler and Wro. Smith were appointed M's.C, Mr Seymour treasurer, Mr Hayson chairman of committee, and Messrs McPonnell and Hayson secretaries. N° pains are to be spared to make the event a success, and, given a fipe night, a moat enjoyable evening .should result. j _ ' Last week-end a Native football team from' Tiroa came down to try conclusions with Marigapehi, and succeeded in defeating us by 12 points to 11. For Tiroa Hodge scored four ,tries, and for Mangapehi Gamble, Cbarteris and Page scored tries,' Charteris converting the last one.
