Marakopa.

The basket social got up in aid of the hall funds took place on June 3rd and was well attended, only a few putting in an appearance in fancy dress. The baskets were eagerly competed for, Miss Rosie Willison's topping the market at £1 4s, the average price being over 10s per basket, and as the takings at the door brought over £5, there should be a considerable balance available for the hall. During the evening Mr Bell, on behalf of the Marakopa settlers and residents, presented Mrs Willison with a handsome set of carvers suitably inscribed, Mr Willison receiving a set of razors, Miss Rosie Willison a silver-backed brush and comb and Miss Olive Willison a gold brooch. Mr J. Willison returned thanks on behalf of himself and family in a speech short and sweet, when three hearty cheers were given, the audience singing "For they are jolly good fellows." The continued rough weather on the coast is responsible for the non-appear-ance of the steamers, both of which are overdue. The storekeepers have, however, profited by past experience and laid in a good supply of "kai" before the weather broke.

It is expected that a start will shortly be made to get the timber on the site for the dairy factory which is expected to be in working order next season.

The roads are beginning to cut up badly as is usual at this time of year, some of the new formation on the Marakopa Valley road being almost impassable at the present time.
