SOCIAL AT MANGAO-HAE.

On Wednesday, 2fith May, Mr and Mrs Were entertained a large circle of friends at their new residence. Unfortunately, however, owing to the inclemency of the weather, a largo number were unable to be present, Nevertheless, between fifty and sixty ladies and gentlemen arrived, some of them having come as far as twenty miles, and whose clothing and horses bore eloquent testimony to the want of belter communication in the back blocks. In spite of all these drawbacks, a most enjoyable evening was spent and both Mrs Were and her daughters are to be congratulated on the most excellent way in which they provided refreshments for such a large company. Music and dancing were the main features of the evening, while cards were provided for those who did not so participate. The dancing was kept up till the early hours of the morning, which was interspersed by many songs and other musical items, contributions being- from Misses Annie and Kathleen Were, Messrs Aubin, Larsen, Mair, Mitchell and Wright, i The duties of M.C. were ably ciyried out by Mr N. Larsen. Towards the close of the evening Mr Troup thanked! Mr and Mrs Were, on behalf of thosoj present, for the great hospitality tlieyj had extended to everyone, saying l|o\v'| grateful all the guests were for fl|o| most pleasant and happy evening theyj had spent.
