The adjourned meeting of the Ohura Settlers' Association was held in the Mangaroa Hall on the 27th May. Mr G. Loveday presided. After explaining the Association's work Cor the past year, he asked for proposals for the future action of the settlers. Mr G. Denison proposed that as the district had passed through the preliminary stages ot local politics, they form a. branch of the Farmers' Union. After considerable discussion a vote was taken showing a majority in favour of forming a branch. A committee was elected, consisting of Messrs Woof, Williams, Mcßae, Howie, Robinson, and Bruce, with Mr S. E. Meredith as chairman. A general meeting of settlers will be called as soon as the committee have the required information as to the rules and objects of the Union.
A large meeting of settlers representative of th<"> Ohura Valley, met in the Niho-Niho Dairy Factory on Saturday to form a district league, known as "the Ohura Railway League, and four sub-leagues as representing Maliere, Otangiwai, Niho-Niho and Mangaroa, to be affiliated with the Auckland Railway League. Mr Lyon was elected to the chair, and in his opening speech pointed out the great prosperity of the district, which was severely checked through having no decent means of transit, lie urged all settlers present to join the League in their respective districts, with tho object of bringing pressure to hear upon the Government to start tho Ongarue-Stratford railway from the Ongarue terminus. Mr Volkcs said the reason why the railway hud not been started was duo to the" fact that; the settlers had not formed a league and sought affiliation with a stronger body, and instanced the commencement of the Tauranga railway as the reside of a determined agitation on the part of the Tauranga Railway League. The following resolution was then proposed by Mr Lyon, and seconded by Mr Toislor:--"That an executive committee be formed, composed of three delegates of the leagues in Matierc, Otangiwai, Niho-Niho and Mangaroa, to meet fortnighiy at NihoNiho, to carry out all business in connection with the Ohura Railway League. That this committee, when formed, will do all in its power to urge the Government to commence the Ongarue - Stratford railway from tho Ongarue terminus." The resolution was carried unanimously.
