THE KING'S BIRTHDAY.

The following telegram has been received by his Worship the Mayor (Mr James Boddie) from Sir Joseph Ward: —

"As a number of enquiries have been made regarding the Government's intention respecting the observance or non-observance of the King's birthday. I desire for your information to say that I have received a cable from the Secretary of State for the Colonies, through his Excellency the Governor, intimating that it is the King's wish there should be no observance of his Majesty's birthday this year. I have, therefore, instructed that his Majesty's pleasure, as far as the Government is concerned is to be given effect to."

The following further telegram has been received by his Worship the Mayor from the Prime Minister: — "Regarding the desire of the King that there should be no celebration of his Majesty's birthday, as complications have arisen owing to the King's birthday being a statutory holiday and must therefore be recognised by a large number of people, a holiday will now be observed on the third of June. It is desirable, however, in view of the king's wish that no should take place on that day." The storekeepers in Te Kuiti have decided to close all day on Friday next (the King's birthday), and remain open to-morrow, Thursday, in accordance with the expression of opinion from the Premier on the subject. The banks will also close, and it is expected that all other places of business will also observe the holiday. The Post and Telegraph office will be closed on the King's Birthday, (Friday) and all mails usually closing on that day will close at 7.30 on Thursday, with the exception of the Main Trunk mails which will be made up as usual. Joseph John Pawelka, who was charged with the murder of Sergeant Maguire, was acquitted on that charge on Saturday last, the jury bringing in a verdict of not guilty.
