ODE TO EDWARD: THE PEACEMAKER.
1901—1910. The King, who loved sweet peace so well, Has joined his much-loved mother now, Where they, together, may watch o'er King George, to • whom the knee doth bow. While Edward lived he always said: "My mother, Great Victoria, knew That wars destroy both lands and homes." And oft from her sweet counsel drew. His Queen was gentle, just and true, And now "Queen Mother" she is styled. No doubt, she now wise counsel gives To George, our King, her precious child. The second son of Edward, who Alone, remains to take his place. But yet we feel he will be wise While he doth hold his father's mace. King Edward scarce had ta'en his throne When on it shone a comet bright, And now, it seems, a greater one Has borne him from man's feeble sight, —LOUISA M. HANDYSIDE. May 24th, 1910.
