KAWA DRAINAGE BOARD.
A special board set up under section 17 of the Land Drainage Act, 1908, to deal with the objections lodged by certain Maoris against the proposed operations of the Kawa Drainage Board which they claimed would interfere with their pel weirs, sat at Te Awamutu last week. The Court consisted of Mr F. O'B. Loughnan, S.M., and Messrs J. A. Young and W. H. Grace, assessors on behalf of the board and objectors respectively. Voluminous evidence was heard in support of the rights of the objectors on the one hand, and the necessity for the construction of the drainage works on the other. Mr Kent appeared for the board, and Dr Bam'ford for the natives. The decision of the Court was that the claims of the natives could be reduced to a monetary value; therefore the construction of the drain must be allowed. When the natives frame definite claims for compensation these will be determined by the Supreme Court. Keep the dairy clean; the co3t, if there be any, will come back many fold in the increased profit.
