ODE TO TE KUITI.
(By H.P., an Outsider.) Ho! Te Kuiti has a Mayor! Say the word and hold your breath; From the Waipa right to Taupo She is greatest,"she is best. From the long majestic river That all nations flock to see, Westward to the rolling billows 'Kuiti is the town to be. She has risen from the squalor Of the mediaeval days. She has shaken off the liquor— This is noble —for it pays. Mighty city, verdant, r fair, Angels guard you in your flight, Let the Mayor hoVer o'er you, HE knows how to lead you right. See the Comet in the heavens, Beacon of thy greatness come, Blazing'forth thy awful splendour, Striking every herald dumb.| Auckland's Mayors come and go, England's and die, But Te Kuiti has a Mayor, Seo, 'tis written in the sky. Allfother cities"stand aghast: Otorohanga dies. from wanton dreams with its eyes; Taumarunui groans and squirms In its impotent rage, And Te Kuiti takes the crown, The bright gem of the age.
