MANGAROA.
Own Correspondent.
Consequent on the death of Dr. Rowlands, a public meeting was convened by the Ohura Medical Association to consider the advisability of procuring an extended guarantee from the settlers to a medical officer for the Ohura, and on February 23rd, a very representative body of settlers met in the Mangaroa Hall. Mr Hope was appointed chairman. On the motion of Mr. Stevenson, it was resolved to convey to Mrs. Rowlands the sympathy of the settlers in her bereavement and their appreciation of the late Dr. Rowlands' skill as a doctor, and his conduct as a thorough gentleman. Mr. G. Denison, hon. secretary of the Ohura Medical Association, explained to the meeting the position of the guarantors; one year of the two years' guarantee had expired, and the committee thought that it would be advisable to arrange for a longer guarantee to procure the services of a medical officer, and the committee before arranging for the services of a doctor wished to have some authority from the settlers to extend the guarantee. Many settlers had offered to continue their present guarantee and if required increase it, a3 the position of settlers like him with a family was such that they would have to seriously think about sending their families outside for the winter. While they were not in a financial position to do so they could not face the risk to keep them in the district if there was no resident doctor. After considerable discussion it was decided that the present committee use their best endeavours to procure the services of a medical officer, and consideration of an extended guarantee be held over to the annual meeting in March,
