PIO PIO.

Own Correspondent,

Since, my last notes to you a party of prominent business men visited the district as cave explorers, though to have seen them you would have taken them for swamp explorers. There is one of the party who is deserving of the V.C. for his gallant action in riding forth on a borrowed horse to find a lost one of the party. Some say it was a pipe he was after, others say it was his hat he went for, but it does not matter much what it was, as the hole is still in the swamp to mark the spot where he and his horse parted company. Bush fires have been the order of the day and there are some very good burns reported, and the settlers are looking for rain to get the grass seed in.

Things have been pretty lively here with our dairy directors since they got notice that the section was gazetted. They have been holding meetings, and pushing the factory for ail it is worth. There was a big field day with them last Saturday when representatives of Mason, Struthers and Co., and J. B. McEwan and Co., were present to place their machinery. It was finallydecided to accept the tender of Mason, Struthers and Co. for an up-to-date plant to work 1000 cows, and tenders are out for carting, the position of secretary, and for firewood. They close on March 10th, and the directors meet on the 11th to decide who is to get the contracts. Mr. Jones, architect, of Te Kuiti, has the building in hand, and tenders close for that on the 10th of March. So you can see that the directors are losing no time.

It is rumoured that Cotter Bros, are building a branch of their Te Kuiti butchery business here.
