A boxing match between Burns and Lang has been definitely fixed for Easter Monday, March 28. The date of the championship sculling race between Barry and Arnst has been fixed for April 2nd. A sneak thief at Raurimu appropriated 200 bricks which were to be used for the erection of a chimney at the police station. Splendid entries have been received for the chopping events at the Te Kuiti Sports, which are to be held on March 2nd. The entries for the chopping and sawing events reach the excellent total of 70. The entries for the foot events close on the 16th inst., and it is expected that these will also reach a large total. The Mangapehi tennis team arrive in Te Kuiti to-day. The team will consist of two lady and four gentlemen players. Matches will be played during the afternoon, and a good contest is expected. The local team will consist of the following players;— Miss Jordan, and Messrs Wallace, Howarth, Matthew, Falwasser and Lumsden.
A Pio Pio Maori has become the possessor of a freak calf. The calf has four nostrils and three eyes, but is otherwise well formed and healthy. The owner of the calf evidently must have heard of "Barnum," for he is turning an honest penny by charging an admittance of two and sixpence to anyone who desires to see the freak.
Mr Charles Mariboe, portrait photographer, of Te Kuiti, has shown us some fine specimens of his art, recently done. These include portrait studies of leading residents, and a wide range of picture postcards of places in the King Country, including Te Kuiti, Mangaweka, Ngaruahoe, and Ruapehu, bush life, the Raurjmu spiral and photographs of tree ferns. No better memento of life in the King Country can be desired than these admirable pictures.
Te Rau-a-moa Co-operative Dairy Factory appear to be having a really good season this year. Not only has the number of suppliers and cows received a satisfactory increase, but the favourable season has been responsible for a considerable higher supply from individual herds. Some of these are r.eturnjng their owners at present 23s per cow per month. This season's butter output will constitute a record for the Auckland province, and already the increase over last year is equivalent to 1000 tons. For the season to date Auckland has exported over 4UOO tons of butter, which may be valued at ,£400,000. The butter shipped for the fortnight ending Friday last totals 14,856 boxes, or 371 tons, as compared with 13,034 boxes, or 325 tons, for the corresponding fortnight of last season. At present ruling prices, the shipment is worth about £40,800. St. Luke's Ladies' Guild is arranging a popple of most attractive openair entertainments' for the present month. On Thursday afternoon next they give a "Gipsy" tea in the Hop Gardens, now very pretty with the hops in bloom. There will be attractions of various kinds, and the admis sion charge of Is includes tea. On Friday, the 25th, there is to be a moonr light concert at the same place, commencing at 8.0 p.m. A most attractive programme is being organised, and includes some fine gramaphone selections, the machine being kindly lent by Mr. Hardy. The admission charge of Is also includes refreshments. The Hop Gardens are beautifully situated, and all who appreciate delightful jeptgrjiainmnets will be anxious to be j/repeiij.'
