MOKAU.
The Mokau correspondent of the Wai tara Mail writes:—
So our wholesale licenses expire in June, and I do not think any one in the two districts of Mokau and Awakino regrets the fact I am" speaking from a knowledge of nearly every incident that has occurred since the granting of those licenses, and can confidently say it was a great mistake. We were inclined to congratulate ourselves when the licenses were granted, and to extend our sympathy to Te Euiti for the rigid censorship which the constable in charge there exercises over the unwary, but after eight months of it, we are satisfied as a body to return to the order of the past. When one considers the amount of letter writing which has been going on re the wholesale licenses, it seems strange that the only guardian of the peace between Waitara and Te Kuiti should be allowed to go on a holiday, and leave the residents totally unprotected. Yet it happened, and it al o happened that his services were not required during his absence of a month.
