AWAKINO.

Mr Newton King, whilst moving his flaxmill plant from Nukahekari to Man'gungu had the misfortune to lose the lot, it is hoped only temporarily. The plant was being moved in a large punt, and was to be towed to its destination by the s.s. Rothesay. The

-pant was loaded up one day, and being Jate in the evening when it was ready to leave, it was deemed advisable to postpone the start until the next morning. The punt was therefore anchored over night and was found next morning to have sunk in about five fathoms of water. The value of the plant was at least £IOOO. Salvage operations are in progress, and it is hoped that they will be successful. Those interesed have decided that it is advisable to have telephone cotnmuiiication between Nukahekari and Awakino. The scheme has been gone into and is now well advanced. Tenders will shortly be called for the erection of the line, which will be some 23 miles in length. This speaks well for the enterprise of the people in the district, and there is no doubt that the benefits accruing from telephonic communication with the outer world, wilJ more than recompense these who are responsible for the original outlay. Messrs Otway and Co. have recently removed their extensive flaxrnilling plant from Waikawau to Waipapa. The undertaking has been a large and hazardous one., and has, to date, taken about four months to remove, only one punt load remaining The mill will be surrounded by a very large area of fine flax country, and the supply almost inexhaustible.
