The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report:—At Hamilton on Thursday, 3rd inst., we had a fair yarding of fat and store cattle, sheep and pigs. Good competition ruled throughout and all sold. Fat cows made from £4 13s to £5 ss; fat heifers, £4 5s to £4 18s; cows and calves, £3 175,6 dto £4 lis; 2to 2J-year-okl steers, up to £4; well-grown calves, £1 4s 6d to £1 12s; younger sorts, 18s to £1 2s 6d; store cows, £2 to £2 14s; springers, up to £5 10s; fat wethers, 14s 6d; fat ewes, lis; pigs, porkers 18s to £1 ss, slips, 15s, weaners 7s 3d to 8s 6d. At Te Awamutu on Saturday, we had a full yarding of cattle, mostly 18-months-okl steers, and calves, the latter being a very choice lot and a credit to the district, all well bred and well done. A good demand existed for all classes, and everything was quitted at auction. Fat heifers made £4 7s 6d to £5 10s; empty cows in forward condition, £3 Is to £3 16s; 18-montbs to 2-year-old steers, £3 5s to £3 8s; 15 to 18-months do., £2 lis to £2 15s; 15-months-old heifers, £2 ss; calves, £1 6s 6d to £1 12s; 228 sold. Figs: Slips, 15s to £1 Is; weaners, 8s 6d to lis 6d. Yearling filly, medium draught, £l4.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., Hamilton, have received the following cable from thenLondon office:—Wool.—As compared with last sales closing rates, prices are about 5 per cent to 7A per cent higher for scoured crossbred, medium greasy crossbred and lambs, coarse crossbred slice and medium crossbred slipe, about par to 5 per cent higher for scoured and greasy merino, 11 to 10 per cent for coarse greasy crossbred 174,000 bales sold; 83,000 taken for the Continent, 12,000 bales for America; 6000 bales held over. Sales closed strong.
Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having held their first sheep fair at Ngaruawahia on Friday, 4th February. There was a very good entry and a large attendance, buyers being present from the surrounding districts, and a large number from Auckland, which materially helped the sale to be a pronounced success. With the exception of 2-tooth ewes, all classes oE sheep were eagerly sought after, especially lambs and wethers. Sound mouth ewes also found ready sale at satisfactory figures, and spirited.bidding was the order of the day Romney rams sold well, especially a small line bred by Mr E. Short, which solicited keen competition, and realised from 5 to 5§ guineas. Other breeds were not much sought after, no doubt due to the fair being held somewhat early in the season. Quotations: —Romney rams, 21 to 5| guineas; 4-tooth wethers, 13s Cd to 13s 7d; 2-tooth wethers, lis 9d, 12s Id to 12s 3d; 2-tooth ewes, 14s 6d, 15s 6d to 18s 6d; 4 and 6-tooth ewes 15s 9d; • f.f.m. ewes, 12s 9d, 13s Id to 13s 6d; s.s.m. ewes, 9s 8d to lis 9d; cull ewes,-5s 6d to 6s 7d; fat lambs, 10s to 10s lOd; rape lambs, 7s 3d to 8s 6d ; store lambs, 6s to 6s 6d ; store lambs (shorn), 4s 8d to 5s 3d. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Auckland, are in receipt of the following cable from their London- office, under date 4th inst.: —Froze i meat. —Quotations: New Zealand prime ox beef fores 2gd, hinds 3Jd. Demand for New Zealand lamb good; prime crossbred North Island heavy 4|d, light 5Jd. Demand for New Zealand mutton better: prime crossbred mutton North Island heavy 3gd, light 3£d Demand for New Zealand beef better, market firm prices, lamb firmer, mutton firm. Demand for Australian lamb good; Australian good average quality crossbred lamb, heavy 3£d, light 4d; mutton, heavy 3|d, light 3£d. In the future quotations will be new season's. Lamb. —Very good demand for all descriptions seems likely to improve until increased arrivals. New Zealand, Canterbury 4|d, Auckland 4§d.
