RAILWAY FATALITY.
A Shunter Killed.
William McPike, a young unmarried man, employed as a shunter at Frankton Junction, met with a serious accident about 5.30 on Monday evening. He was riding on the cowcatcher of a shunting engine, when 1 e apparently slipped and fell off. The engine passed over him, practically severing both legs close to the body. He was removed to the Waikato Hospital, where he died yesterday morning. An inquest was opened before Mr, Bond yesterday morning, and adjourned till Thursday, after taking evidence of identification and Dr. Douglas' evidence. The latter stated that McPike was brought to the hospital about 8 o'clock on Monday night in a state of collapse, suffering from a fompound fracture of both thighs and legs. The lower extremities were badly crushed. Amputation of both limbs was made under an anaesthetic, but McPike died about an hour later.
