METALLING THE MAIN ROAD.
Message from Mr Jennings.
Mr Jennings' views on the question of main roads are well known. He has repeatedly announced his conviction that the completion of main arterial roads was a responsibility which should legitimately be borne by the Government, and this policy the Member for the district has advocated persistently. Mr Jennings has also been unceasing in his efforts to have the work in question started'without delay, and from the tone of a telegram received from him yesterday morning the Member was under the impression his efforts had been crowned with success.
With a view to ascertaining if there had been any understanding between the Minister and Member as to the vote being used as a subsidy, a telegram explaining the purport of the Minister's offer was sent to the Member. Immediately came the direct denial as contained in the following telegraphic message:— "Never understood it was subsidy 'money, and Minsiter never stated so to me. W. T. JENNINGS." A further message from Mr Jennings stated that the Member would I endeavour to visit Te Kuiti next week.
