PROSPECTS OF THE FRUIT CROP.

The following is a summary of the repors of the inspectors oE the Agricultural Department on the prospects oft. he fruit crop in the various fruitgrowing districts: — North Auckland: Apples, average to light; plums, light; Japanese, lighter than average; peaches, below average; pears, fair in some districts, below the average generally, caused through the inclement spring. South Auckland: Apples and pears, moderate to good; plums, moderate; peaches, poor; apricots, Thames, good. • Hawko'a Bay and Wellington East: Apples, good; pears, medium; early peaches, light; later variety peaches fair to goody. English plums, fair; Japanese, very good; apricots, medium; small fruits good. Taranaki and Wellington West: Plums, light; apples, fair; Washingtons, good; early, peaches are few; other peaches, fair; pears, medium.

Nelson: All stone fruit light; apples and pears, very heavy; raspberries, good. Marlborough: -Apples, good; pears, good average; European plums, medium; Japanese plums, fair; peaches, good; apricots, medium to an entire failure; cherries, fair average; bush fruits (currants and gooseberries), good. (The drenching rain in the early spring i 3 probably responisble for the failure of the apricots.) Westland and Canterbury: Peaches, apricots, plums and cherries, light; apples, good; pears, medium. Otago and Southland: Peaches, very good; apricots, with the exception of a few orchards in Central Otago, cut by frosts, very good; plums, heavy; apples and pears, good; cherries and strawberries, very good.
