ACCIDENT AT TE KUITI

An accident occurred this morning at the Government quarry, which might easily have ended fatally; as it was two men, T. Smith and A. Gullett, were severely shaken, and cut about the head and face. The first charge fired this year was being discharged, and it appeared to have exploded before the men expected it, with the result that tons of stone were dislodged on to them. Smith and Gullett were rolled down the steep face with the falling debris, and sustained severe cuts and bruises. In view of the weight of stone dislodged, it is extremely lucky that they escaped with their lives. By the time the second man was carried down, Dr. Fullerton, who had been hastily summoned, was on the spot, and had them fixed up and put to bed. The most serious injuries were extensive scalp wounds in each case, which necessitated stitches being put in.

It is expected that both men will make rapid'recoveries and be about in a few days, but the doctor thinks it necessary to keep them under observation in view of possible internal injuries.
