PIOPIO.

Own Correspondent. Things socially have been very lively throughout the holidays. The settlers' annual picnic on Boxing Day was a great success and the social on New Year's Eve made a fitting ending of a most enjoyable week. Mr G. McKay, as secretary, and all the committee worked without stint to make the social a success. There wai a very good attendance and had it not been for the heavy downpour of rain during the evening the hall would have been uncomfortably packed. Dancing was interspersed with songs during the evening, and at midnight the whole assemblage stood up and joined in singing "Auld Lang Syne." New Year greetings were general, and the wishes were, of the most genial nature possible. Supper was handed round, and when everyone had satisfied the inner man dancing was resumed and kept up. till daylight. It was agreed on all hands that the social marking the setting of the old year arid the dawn of 1910 was one of the most enjoyable yet held in the district. • Mr G. Bevege was M.C., and carried out the duties pertaining to that important position in an efficient manner. The hall was tastefully decorated ' with evergreens, and those who were responsible for the arrangements are to be complimented on their efforts. •

| I hear that two of our old Mairoa settlers have .sold their sections and are leaving the district. Matters in connection with the dairy factory are at present enshrouded in mystery, or perhaps the mystery is that nothing is being done by the directors. It should be remembered "that summer is here and roads are in good order for carting. The timber is on the ground for the erection of the new hairdressing saloon and billiard room, and I suppose the building will be erected during the summer.

I understand Mr V. S. Hattaway has had plans for his new boarding house prepared. The new establishment, when in going order, should be an acquisition to the district.

There is little of importance transpiring in the district just now. "Your Own" begs the settlers to accept his best wishes for the New Year.
