WAIRERE CARNIVAL.

An enjoyable Gathering.

The third annual carnival under the auspices of the Wairere Aquatic Club was held on the Mokau river at Wairere on New Year's Day. The weather, which had been showery on the previous day, was everything that could be desired for the regatta, and a large crowd assembled to take part in what is probably destined to be one of the most popular holiday fixtures of the whole district. Every natural facility is in evidence at Wairere for the promotion of a carnival on a grand scale, and a programme of exceptional variety and attarctiveness can readily he prepared. The attendance at this year's fixture fell somewhat short of that of previous years. The Europeans were fairly well represented, but the Maoris were, all away at the tangi being held at Mokau Heads in consequence of the death of Kingi Wetere. During the day a varied programme was got through, the majority of events giving rise to keen contests. The following are the results:— Boys'swim: J. Thomas. Men's race, 100 yds: T. Anderson. Men's race, 220 yds: McLean. 100 yds swim: L. Reardon. ■, Horse swim: A. S. Gresham 1, J. Johnston 2.

Neat header: E. Pearson 1, H. Houghton 2. Breast stroke, 100 yds: G, Brown 1, E. Pearson 2.

High jump: R. Coburn 1, Pakira 2. Boys' neat header: Tangihaere. Hop, step, and jump: Wharange.

—CARNIVAL CONCERT.—

In the evening a concert wa3 held in a large marquee on the ground, and a very enjoyable programme was got through. Mr G. Elliott presided and Mrs Elliott kindly played the various accompaniments. The following are the items:—Song, "The Fisherman and his Child," Mr Livingstone (encored); song, "Tatters," Miss Mossman (encored); song, "Off to Philadelphia," Mr Anthony; recitation, "Old Mother Hubbard," Mr G. Mossman; song, "The Old Brigade," Mr H. Smith (encored); song, "Love was once a Little Boy," Miss Burnard; song, "The Holy City," Mr G. Nelson (encored); exhibition of clubs, Master B. Mossman; song, "Father O'Flynn,} Mr Elliott; duet, "Sing mc to Sleep," 1 Mrs Elliott and Miss Mossman; song, "Coon Song, "Mr Houghton (encored); song, "The Sea is England's Glory," Mr Mossman; glee, "Johnny Schmoker," company.
