KAWHIA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The annual nice tin;: "f the Kawhia County Council was he 1 i on Wednesday 24th inst. at noon, when the following Councillors were present :—W. J. Shaw. G. G. Jonathan, K. Davies, A. Elliott, A W. Cabbage, and Jas. Kearns. On the motion of Cr Babbage, seconded by Cr Kearns, Cr W. J. Shaw was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. The Council met again for the transaction of ordinary business in the afternoon. A letter was received from the Minister of Public Works slating that he was obtaining a report as to the large landslip which occurred on the Mahcenui-Kawbia road some weeks ago. The regatta committee were granted permission to charge for admission to the wharf on 29th December; also to erect hurdles on the beach for the canoe hurdle races.
The Council decided not to take any steps to collect dog tax from Europeans until the matter of the payment of the tax by Natives had been satisfactorily settled, as it was considered unfair that the settlers should be taxed for their dog 3 while the Maori dogs went free.
A counter petition was received from ratepayers of the Northern end of the Mataowhai Hiding objecting to the proposal for a division of the riding contained in the petition presented last meeting. In view of this the Council decidvJ to do nothing further in the matter of redividing the riding. It was decided to apply for provisional consent to a loan of £IOOO for further harbour improvements including landings and sheds at various places round the Harbour and a wharf at Lemon Point.
